Thailand: the Prime Ministers speak

Amid ugly scenes on the streets of Bangkok, I spoke to both the former Thai prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, and the current prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

First I asked Mr Thaksin, who is living in self-imposed exile, if he is organising the anti-government protests himself. Here's the interview:

Then I asked Mr Abhisit if he gave the order to soldiers confronting the protesters to use live ammunition to disperse them.

One of the leaders of the "red-shirt" protest movement in Thailand has promised to continue a clandestine campaign against the government.

Jakrapob Penkair managed to escape overseas after the army broke up the mass protests in Bangkok a week ago.

Speaking to the BBC from in hiding, he said the movement would use different tactics to confront the government, including possible armed attacks.

The protesters say the government is illegitimate, and want fresh elections.

The sudden collapse of the red-shirt protests last week has left the movement in disarray.

Five of the organisers have been arrested and are being held under the emergency decree, which is still in effect. The police have issued arrest warrants for another 48.

However one of its most outspoken leaders, Jakrapob Penkair, has managed to flee the country.

Speaking by phone from an undisclosed location, he told the BBC that the struggle to bring down the current government would continue, but that they would no longer rely on conventional forms of protest.

"The state of emergency is a big help. It puts people underground.

"I believe the room for unarmed and non-violent means to resolve Thailand's problem is getting smaller every day," he said.

There have been sporadic attempts to blockade roads and public buildings in the north of Thailand - a stronghold of the red-shirt movement - but little other activity since the protesters were surrounded by troops and forced to disperse last week.

Radio and television channels sympathetic to the movement have been shut down, and coverage by other Thai media has been largely negative following the violent clashes in Bangkok.

There is still strong mass support for the movement's goal of a new constitution and the rehabilitation of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in parts of the country.

But it is not clear how that now can be translated into an effective challenge to the government.

Lies told by Thaksin:

He isn't financing & openly-fueling the red shirt movement? Yes he is - many of his goons are paid millions of baht to retain their support and he has openly called for them to bring a revolution.

He "loves" Thailand's poor? No, he relies on their relative lack of awareness and his ability to buy them off cheaply to fight his personal war. He doesn't give a damn about them as humans.

He wants "real democracy" for Thailand? That is perhaps the biggest lie of all.

I am one of the PAD Yellow shirt members. Here is my biased contribution to be given out to the world. You decide for yourself.

Red Shirts leaders use rumor about death to stimulate their protester. No provided evidence or name identification on who had actually died. They protest violently just because of the rumor occurred.

When PAD-yellow shirts went to protest, if a person really died, we all shared tears announce the braveone's name and remain silent for minutes everyday thinking of them.

2 'RESCIDENTS' in Nang Leung area have been killed. One of them was a 53 year-old local man who earlier was trying to get the red shirted protesters out of his area. He was angry at them for risking other peole's lives in the area. He was shot at the back several times in front of many people in the area.

the second one was a young boy killed in the same area.

None of these was killed by the bullets of Thai military.

These protesters are well-equipped with weapons.

ทักษิณ : ไม่ ...(อ้ำอึ้ง) แน่นอน ... ผม ผม ผม ผมสามารถเคลียร์คดีได้ เพราะผมไม่ได้ทำอะไรผิด ถ้าคุณดูสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต คุณจะเห็นว่าคณะกรรมการที่ถูกแต่งตั้งขึ้นมาทำคดี (ทักษิณหมายถึง คตส.) พวกเขาทั้งหมดคือกลุ่มคนที่อยู่ตรงข้ามกับผม
